This unique granite landmark pays homage to the struggle to get the Afrikaans language officially recognized across South Africa. Designed by architect Jan Van Wyk, it is formed of obelisk style columns and was erected in 1975 on the 100th anniversary of the Society of Real Afrikaaners, which was founded in Paarl. The monument has wonderful views over the farmlands of Stellenbosch and across to Table Mountain.
Most people who think of South Africa don’t automatically think of cars, so you might be surprised to find more than 100 years of motoring history housed just outside the picturesque town of Franschhoek, at the foot of the Drakenstein Mountains. The displays artfully take you through different time periods, with cars dating from 1898 to post 1960s, including a red Henry Ford classic model T, reminiscent of the car that Kenneth Grahame made his character Toad drive in The Wind in The Willows. The Museum presents as much about cultural and social history as it does about motoring and there is something of interest for everyone.
